One of the best tips I’ve learned about family business success is the importance of having a clear, legally binding succession plan in place to protect the future of the business (and the family).

    • TAB Boards says:

So true. Proper, legal planning will always improve key transitions in a business, especially when the added relationships of a family are involved.

Put every major decision in writing . Fight the urge to make oral agreements and it will save you some heartache down the line

My best tip is that there is clear communication and goals all hashed out. If there is poor or no communication working with family can turn a blessing into a curse.

    • TAB Boards says:

Very true Hoo! Communication is key in every business success. When it comes to family businesses, there’s a whole other dynamic in place that makes this even more important.

My sucession planing was my son telling me he needed to pay for college is taking my business to do so. I tried to get them to understand everything at a younger age but it seems that something just clicked and he got into it. My advice is to first be sure the family members want to be involved and dont push it on them.
